A 15-year-old girl who pulled a kidnaped 3-year-old boy from a burning car was honored Wednesday as a hero who saved the child’s life.
Nancy Arellano, a junior at Jordan High School in South Los Angeles, was given the Westec Award for Youth Heroism in a ceremony in front of Parker Center police headquarters.
The victim, Samuel Jones Jr., suffered third-degree burns over 60% of his body in the fire, set after he was kidnaped from a Long Beach day-care center. A woman who had worked with his mother was arrested and faces trial on several felony charges.
Arellano was walking along a South Los Angeles street when she saw the car erupt in flames. She heard the boy screaming as the flames engulfed the car’s interior. The teen-ager yanked open one of the doors.
