Century High School’s 21-20 victory over previously unbeaten Trabuco Hills wasn’t the only surprise Saturday in Santa Ana Stadium.

Rex Ressler, a walk-on coach for the girls’ freshman-sophomore basketball team at Century, won a new pickup truck in the school’s halftime promotion that benefits its athletic department.

Three contestants are selected to participate in the promotion in which Ressler accurately placed a 30-yard kick off a tee into the bed of the truck to claim the prize.

“I practiced kicking an imaginary ball while I was in the bathroom during the first half, but other than that, I certainly didn’t prepare for this,” Ressler said.

Greg Coombs, boys’ basketball at Century, said the promotion would continue at the Centurions’ next home game.

Dial Nine: Former Sunny Hills running back Brian Pizula was presented the AT&T; Long Distance Award after his 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown last week in New Mexico State’s 35-21 loss to Nevada.

Pizula, a sophomore physical education major, was presented the weekly award for having the longest kickoff return in the nation. He is averaging 28.8 yards on eight returns, the fourth-best mark in the nation.
