A Cellular Effect Without the Cost

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. — A computerized badge tells a central computer where some Digital Equipment Corp. workers are when they leave their desks, and forwards calls to their new location.
The experiment involving 30 employees in the Maynard, Mass., firm’s Cambridge office is designed to see if the badges might have commercial use.
Engineers and sales staff spend up to 70% of their time away from their desks, said Italy-based Olivetti, designer of the badges.
If a badge wearer doesn’t want a call forwarded to a location, he can punch a button on the badge.
