Michael Welch rushed for 169 yards and a touchdown in 27 carries as Southern Mississippi upstaged East Carolina’s high-powered offense in a 38-21 victory Thursday night at Greenville, N.C.
The Pirates (4-4) rank third nationally in passing and seventh in total offense. But the Golden Eagles (6-3), fifth in the nation against the pass, flexed their defensive muscle to spoil East Carolina’s first national television appearance at home.
Western Kentucky 41, Southern Illinois 39--Eddie Thompson ran for four touchdowns and a school-record 309 yards and Western Kentucky broke a 44-year-old school record at Bowling Green, Ky.
A blocked field goal in the final seconds secured the win for the Hilltoppers (3-4).
The previous rushing record was 297 yards by Clarence Jackson in 1971. Western Kentucky also had 617 yards total offense, breaking the mark of 502 yards set in 1948.
