Funds to Be Sought for Airport: The government said it will seek approval from the Legislative Council’s Finance Committee so it can award a $1.16-billion site preparation contract for the colony’s new airport. The decision flies in the face of China’s opposition to Hong Kong building the airport without first getting Beijing’s approval for its overall financing. It could lead to further deterioration in already bad Sino-British relations over the colony’s future development. The Legislative Council is Hong Kong’s parliament.
