SOUTHERN CALIFORNIA REGIONAL VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS : Three County Teams Are Seeded No. 1
- Share via
Corona del Mar, Newport Harbor and Capistrano Valley Christian are the top-seeded teams in their respective divisions for the Southern California Regional girls’ volleyball playoffs, which begin Tuesday night at various sites.
Corona del Mar (20-0), the Southern Section Division I champion and the top-ranked team in the nation, will play host to Los Angeles University High (11-6) in a Division I first-round match Tuesday night.
Newport Harbor (15-4) will play host to San Diego University High (15-12) in a Division III first-round match. The Sailors reached the section Division I semifinals, but are seeded in Division III for the regionals, which are based on enrollment.
Sailor Coach Dan Glenn had an option of moving to a larger-school division, but elected to stay in Division III because of his sophomore-dominated lineup.
Capistrano Valley Christian (18-0) will open its defense of the State Division V title by playing host to a first-round match against La Jolla Bishop (23-5).
All three top-seeded teams have secured home sites throughout the three rounds of the regionals. Regional winners from each of the five Northern and Southern California divisions will meet in the State finals Dec. 5 at Cal State Fullerton. Second-round matches are scheduled for Saturday, with regional finals set for Dec. 1.
Five other teams also qualified for the regionals--third-seeded Laguna Beach (20-2) in Division I, unseeded Sunny Hills (19-2) and Edison (19-3) in Division II, unseeded Whittier Christian (12-6) in Division IV and unseeded Calvary Chapel (15-2) in Division V.
Edison, which lost to Sunny Hills in the section quarterfinals, will open at second-seeded Del Mar Torrey Pines. The Chargers will be without starting setter Natasha Zila, who left the team because of personal reasons after a section quarterfinal loss to Sunny Hills.
