The Pittsburgh Pirates signed free-agent outfielder Lonnie Smith, the second former Atlanta player the Pirates have acquired since their loss to the Braves last October in the National League playoffs.
The Pirates had signed relief pitcher Alejandro Pena.
Smith, 37, is expected to platoon in left field with rookie Albert Martin to help fill the vacancy created when Barry Bonds signed with San Francisco. A 14-year veteran, Smith will make $1 million in base salary, with a possible $500,000 in incentives.
