STOCKTON, Calif. — Chuck Terrell scored 16 points Monday night to lead University of the Pacific to a 68-56 Big West Conference basketball victory over previously undefeated Cal State Long Beach.
The 49ers, 8-1 overall and 1-1 in the conference, trailed, 34-28, at halftime, but cut Pacific’s lead to 36-35 on a three-pointer by Rod Hannibal with 16:10 to play.
That was as close as Long Beach would get, however. The Tigers (5-5, 1-1) pushed their lead to 58-48 with 4:52 remaining before the 49ers made their final, futile run.
Long Beach’s Brian Camper hit a three-pointer and Lucious Harris added a jumper at 2:53 to narrow the lead to 58-53.
Pacific controlled the ball for the next 1:10 on the strength of three consecutive offensive rebounds, and Glenn Griffin’s three points lifted the Tigers to a 61-53 lead with 1:43 to play.
Pacific outscored the 49ers, 7-3, the rest of the way.
The Tigers held Long Beach, which made only 32.8% of its shots (20 of 61), to its lowest scoring output of the season.
The 49ers made only six of 27 shots from three-point range before 2,465 fans at the Spanos Center on the Pacific campus.
