NOTEBOOK / GARY KLEIN : Bishop Amat’s Ili, Duarte’s Ainsworth Are Players of Year

Wilhans Ili, a defensive lineman from Bishop Amat, and Greg Ainsworth, a quarterback from Duarte, were named Southern Section football players of the year in their respective divisions.

The two seniors were among 44 players from the San Gabriel Valley who were named to All-Southern Section teams in 11 divisions.

Ili, a 5-11, 280-pound senior, was selected player of the year in Division I after helping to lead Bishop Amat to an unbeaten season. Bishop Amat Coach Mark Paredes was named Division I coach of the year.

Ainsworth, a 6-1, 185-pound senior, shared co-MVP honors in Division VI with Valencia linebacker Chris Draft.

Bishop Amat placed six players on the Division I team, including Ili, running back Rodney Sermons, lineman Chris Gallardo, receiver Daylon McCutcheon, linebacker George Guzman and defensive back Paul Shay.

Here are the remaining San Gabriel Valley players selected to All-Southern Section teams:

Division II

Running back Saladin McCullough, lineman Jonathon Mosley and linebacker Derrick Norman of Muir and linebacker Treyvone Towns of Pasadena.

Division III

Linemen Charles Hatcher of Diamond Bar; lineman Sefo Petero and defensive back Kevin Devine of Nogales; lineman Russ Taylor of Rowland, and defensive back Lawrence Phillips of Baldwin Park.

Division IV

Claremont kicker Morgan Janger and Damien lineman Casey Dailey.

Division VI

Ainsworth, running back Johnnie Shelton, linemen Ray Bienvenue and Nakia Ware, and defensive back Nathaniel Jacquet of Duarte; running back Mike Harris, lineman Robbie Lane and defensive back Phil Hoagland of Charter Oak; receiver Yo Yamamoto and tight end Dan Carrington of Workman; kicker Rudy Fuentes and linebacker Conan Riojas of Rosemead; quarterback Tommy Vazquez of Walnut, running back Brian Lee of Wilson, linebacker Tom Rosser of Los Altos and defensive back John Claypoole of Arroyo.

Division VII

Lineman Juan Hernandez and defensive back Shannon Francis of Azusa, and running back Graig Moore of Bassett.

Division VIII

Receiver Steve Park, linemen Karl Hubmann and Brian Dennis and punter Tom Moreland of San Marino; running back Z Hodges of Blair, linebacker Doug Withers of South Pasadena, and linebacker Andrew Costantino of Temple City.

Division X

Western Christian tight end Stuart Hamill.
