Field’s Decides to Brown-Bag It

Marshall Field’s is going green by going brown.
The distinctive dark green shopping bags that for years have identified Field’s shoppers are being replaced today with plain brown ones.
“We’ll save 25,000 trees,” said Daniel J. Skoda, president of the Chicago-based department store chain. “That’s a lot of trees.”
The dark green paper bags are not recyclable because they are covered with an oil-based ink and clay-based coating that gives them their sheen.
The brown bags--Field’s calls them beige--are not only recyclable but made of at least 50% recycled paper and printed with water-based ink.
The beige bag will also replace the white and black bags used at Dayton’s and Hudson’s stores, also owned by Field’s parent, Dayton-Hudson Corp.
