World IN BRIEF : SOMALIA : Fighting Erupts, Imperils New Talks

A new round of peace talks among warring Somali factions foundered after fighting erupted near the southern port of Kismayu. A U.N. spokesman said the talks were near collapse because of objections by Gen. Mohammed Farah Aidid, one of Somalia’s main warlords, to what he called new cease-fire violations by a chief rival. Aidid’s faction urged suspension of the talks until the violations end.
