Bolshoi Repairs: The 168-year-old Bolshoi Theater in Moscow, a treasured symbol of Russia’s cultural prowess, needs a $300-million, top-to-bottom overhaul but has no place for its renowned ballet and opera troupes to perform during what could be two years of repairs, a spokesman said Wednesday. Closing down is not an option, he added, because the troupes would not survive the hiatus. There are 1,000 singers and dancers in the Bolshoi company and in all, the Bolshoi employs 2,500 people.
