BOYS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : South Gate Upsets Fremont, 63-58, in Overtime

Miguel Villegas’ three free throws in overtime helped South Gate upset Fremont, 63-58, in a Central League game Friday.

Villegas gave the Rams a two-point lead with seven seconds left in the overtime period. Fremont had a chance to tie the score, but Ricky Brown missed two free throws and Thomas Hildreth hit a three-point shot for South Gate as time expired.

South Gate, which trailed by as many as 11 points, took the lead, 46-45, on Eric Wright’s layup with 7:20 left in the fourth quarter. Ty Drummer made three consecutive three-point shots as Fremont took a a 54-50 lead with 4:20 remaining.

But South Gate battled back to tied the score at 56 on a layup by Sai Tuialii with 1:18 left.

Fremont played for the last shot, but Villegas stole the ball with three seconds left and missed a jump shot as time expired in regulation.

The game was the first between the two schools since Fremont beat South Gate in last year’s City Section 3-A Division final.

In Wednesday’s games, South Gate beat Bell, 89-52, and Fremont defeated Locke, 79-70.

Records: South Gate 18-3, Fremont 15-5.

FRIDAY

Jefferson 69, Bell 50--Jefferson’s balanced attack resulted in four starters scoring in double figures, leading to an easy win in an Eastern League game.

Anthony Martin and Jason Weaver had 16 points each to pace Jefferson. Keith Parris added 15 points and John Johnson had 12. Bell’s Ruben Munoz led all scorers with 21 points.

Records: Jefferson 10-8; Bell 7-9.

Wilson 95, Hollywood 57--Octavio Brito scored a game-high 36 points to pace Wilson to a decisive Northern Conference win.

Record: Wilson 4-10.

Verbum Dei 88, Salesian 38--Andre Miller scored nine of his 14 points and Verbum Dei made five three-pointers as the Eagles raced to a 33-4 lead in the first period in a Santa Fe League game at Compton College.

On Tuesday, Verbum Dei beat Cathedral, 80-59.

Record: Verbum Dei 18-4.

Lincoln 83, Eagle Rock 67--Ruben Castellano and Keith Whitner each had 19 points to boost Lincoln to a Northwest League victory.

On Wednesday, Lincoln defeated Wilson, 61-49.

Records: Lincoln 15-4.

St. Bernard 62, Loyola 59--The Vikings hit seven of 10 free throws in the fourth quarter and upset Loyola in a Mission League game.

The Vikings were led by guard Darren Mitchell who had 15 points, three steals and five assists.

Records: Loyola 17-5; St. Bernard 11-15.

Belmont 78, Verdugo Hills 56--Oliver Collado scored 20 points to lead Belmont to a Northeast League win.

On Wednesday, Franklin beat Belmont, 63-61.

Record: Belmont 7-10.

Dorsey 70, Carson 51--Dorsey guard Davy Fortson scored 11 of his 15 points in the third quarter to lead a rally that pushed the Dons past Carson in a Southern League game.

Kenya Wilkins and Jermel Monroe added 12 points apiece for the Dons.

Records: Dorsey 11-7; Carson 12-10.

Westchester 46, Los Angeles 29--Los Angeles forfeited after Coach Craig Murray received two technical fouls with seven seconds remaining in the first half, thus immediately ending the Coastal Conference game in accordance with City Section rules.

On Wednesday, Venice beat Los Angeles, 74-72.

Records: Westchester 16-6; Los Angeles 9-10.

Note: Game stopped in the second period.

Manual Arts 70, University 63--After making only 33% of its shots in the first three quarters, Manual Arts made 10 of 11 fourth-quarter shots to beat University in a Coastal Conference game.

Records: Manual Arts 16-6; University 10-10.

Locke 95, Huntington Park 81--Demetrius Nettles had 27 points and Jamal Pork added 15 to lead Locke in a Central League contest.

Record: Locke 14-7.

Garfield 62, Roosevelt 57--Garfield survived a scare from Roosevelt and came away with a narrow Eastern League victory.

The Bulldogs led by 19 at halftime, but the Roughriders rallied behind a 30-point performance by Miguel Enriquez and came to within three points, 60-57, late in the fourth quarter.

Bulldog guard Cesar Gonzalez hit two free throws to put the game out of reach, 62-57, with 23 seconds left.

On Wednesday, Roosevelt beat Jordan, 76-63.

Records: Garfield 12-9; Roosevelt 3-15.

Bell Gardens 50, San Gabriel 49--Guard Robert Lizarraga drove through the middle and hit a layup with eight seconds left to lift the Lancers to an Almont League win.

Records: Bell Gardens 16-6; San Gabriel 10-13.

WEDNESDAY

Bishop Montgomery 71, Loyola 59--Junior forward Jayson Sanders scored 13 of his game-high 24 points in the fourth quarter to lead Bishop Montgomery in a key Mission League matchup.

The victory gave the Knights a season sweep of the Cubs and sole possession of first place. Both teams entered the game tied for the league lead.

Except for a moment in the first quarter, Bishop Montgomery led throughout the game. At halftime the Knights held a 36-27 advantage.

The Cubs seemed on the verge of a comeback early in the fourth quarter, but Sander scored 11 consecutive points, including two three-pointers, in just 27 seconds. Loyola’s standout forward Toby Bailey answered Sander’s second three-pointer with one of his own to narrow the score to 56-49. But Bishop Montgomery responded with seven unanswered points.

Records: Bishop Montgomery 18-2; Loyola 17-4.

Fremont 79, Locke 70--Fremont’s relentless defense forced 11 steals and spurred the Pathfinders to a key Central League win.

Guards Rickey Brown, who had 23 points and five rbounds, and Tommie Davis, with 19 points and four rebounds, led Fremont.

Dorsey 72, Washington 64--Kenya Wilkins led the Dons with 19 points and four assists and Davey Fortson chipped in 15 points as Dorsey cruised to a Pacific League victory.

Records: Dorsey 10-7; Washington 16-3
