Catholic Priest Draws 3-Year Term for Fondling Girl

CHICAGO — A Roman Catholic priest whose case helped change the way area church officials deal with sexual abuse by the clergy was sentenced Friday to three years in jail for fondling a teen-aged girl.
The Rev. Robert Mayer was convicted in December of four counts of sexual abuse involving a 14-year-old student who had come to his rectory for counseling.
Mayer’s case drew widespread publicity because it was revealed that he had been accused of similar offenses during an earlier assignment at another parish, but was allowed to continue parish work.
Mayer, 53, had maintained his innocence.
