Manning Voted to Western All-Stars : NBA: He becomes the Clippers’ first selection for the game since Marques Johnson in 1986.

TIMES STAFF WRITER

Danny Manning was selected to the Western Conference All-Star team Tuesday, becoming the first Clipper so honored since Marques Johnson in 1986.

Manning, voted in as a reserve in a poll of West coaches, was 12th in the league in scoring at 22.5 points heading into Tuesday night’s game against the San Antonio Spurs and fourth among conference forwards. That is his only placing among the league leaders, but the fifth-year player is also one of the top ballhandlers and passers among game’s big men.

NBA All-Stars--A chart in Wednesday’s editions incorrectly listed Charles Barkley’s affiliation. Barkley plays for Phoenix.

“A lot of things come into play when coaches select the reserves,” Manning said. “It’s not so much statistics as what you bring to a team.

“I think it’s definitely an honor to be selected. All the credit goes to my teammates and coaches. I’m just fortunate to play with so many unselfish players.”

Manning said he was a little surprised when he got the news in a phone call from General Manager Elgin Baylor, but he shouldn’t have been. Although voting is not released, Manning has long been considered a strong favorite to make the team, and scoring 20 points or more in the eight previous games as the Clippers began to play well again cemented his spot as one of five reserves making their first appearance.

The other first-time selections for the Feb. 21 game at Salt Lake City are Detlef Schrempf of the Indiana Pacers for the East and Sean Elliott of the Spurs, Shawn Kemp of the Seattle SuperSonics and Mitch Richmond of the Sacramento Kings for the West. Also, Paul Westphal of the Phoenix Suns and the West is coaching for the first time.

It should be an especially memorable time for Manning. Not only is he attending the All-Star game for the first time, but wife Julie will be close to delivering the couple’s second child, expected to be a boy.

“I feel fortunate and blessed,” he said. “I feel good about what’s happening in my life. I’ve just got to make sure my wife holds off until I’m there. I’m sure that’s what she wants to hear--hold off.”

And if she doesn’t?

“If it happens, I’ll just try to be in two places at once,” Manning said.

Seventeen of the league’s 27 teams will be represented, not counting the three-point shooting and slam dunk contests the day before the game. Cleveland has the most players--Mark Price, Brad Daugherty and Larry Nance.

For the first time since the game began in 1951, neither the Lakers nor Boston Celtics will be represented.
