Double Olympic figure skating champion Katarina Witt was reinstated as an amateur Friday and given the go-ahead to compete in next year’s Winter Olympics in Lillehammer, Norway. Witt, 27, retired from competition to skate in professional shows and make movies after winning her second Olympic gold at the 1988 Calgary Games.
The International Skating Union general secretary Baert Haesler said another seven skaters he would not name would also be allowed to return to competition and more applications were expected.
