The Toronto Globe and Mail and the Lawrence Eagle-Tribune claim that former hockey union leader Alan Eagleson assisted Peter Karmanos, chairman of Compuware Corp. of Farmington Hills, Mich., in an attempt to buy an NHL team, beginning in 1988.
They report that Eagleson, who retired as executive director of the NHL Players Assn. at the end of 1991, had a conflict of interest for representing players and a potential owner at the same time.
