A Persian Gulf War veteran has been sentenced to 30 years to life in prison for the robbery-murder of a television news engineer. Superior Court Judge Lance Ito added five years to the 25 years-to-life sentence imposed Monday on John Louis Rex, 23, of Burbank, because a handgun was used in the slaying.
Rex pleaded guilty last month to killing Jeff Webreck, 44, of Glendale, an engineer for KCOP-TV, and burying the body in Angeles National Forest.
Webreck vanished after leaving the Channel 13 studios in Hollywood on Sept. 4, 1991. His body was found three days later.
Rex was reported absent without leave from an Army base in Oklahoma in July, 1991, after returning from the Persian Gulf. He turned himself in at Ft. Irwin near Barstow six days after Webreck’s slaying.
