PREP PREVIEW 1993: Girls’ Swimming : MARINA
- Share via
Coach: Dave Pickford (sixth year)
1992: Third in Sunset League; fifth in 4-A championship meet.
Key Returners: Katie Danlasky, Sr.; Linda Levitan, Sr.; Alison Mijares, Jr.; Stephanie Natcher, Sr.
Key Newcomers: Adrienne Leight, Fr., butterfly and distance freestyle; Kristi Rietzel, Fr., backstroke and individual medley.
Outlook: Pickford hasn’t thrown in the towel before his first swimmer leaves the starting blocks, but he’s still picking Fountain Valley to repeat as league champion and for Marina to finish better at the Southern Section championship meet. The Vikings have a slight depth problem, compounded by the loss of three members of their All-American medley relay--two graduated and Keiko Iwahara returned to Japan--and of three-time All-American backstroker Sara West, who is now at California. So while Marina has several gaps to fill in order to be competitive with Edison in the league race for second place, the Vikings will be helped by their strength in all freestyle events.
