Coach: Mark Mednick (fourth year)
1992: 16-2, 9-1 in South Coast League; reached 4-A quarterfinals, losing to finalist Huntington Beach; finished tied with Capistrano Valley for league title.
Key returners: Brent Eldridge, Sr., 6-5, middle blocker; Doug Gotthard, Sr., 6-0, outside hitter; Eric Phernumbucq, Sr., 6-1, setter; Greg Wakeham, Sr., 6-6, middle blocker.
Key newcomers: Dave Beam, Sr., 6-2, outside hitter, Erik Silberman, Sr., 6-0, outside hitter.
Outlook: Irvine joins the Sea View League this season along with Santa Margarita, making it Orange County’s toughest. Although three key players have graduated--all-county outside hitter Chris Swanner, setter Jason Mickartz and outside hitter Brady Hamilton--look for the Vaqueros to contend for the league title. Wakeham, a starter last season who is among the top six players in the county, plays basketball and will likely get a late start on volleyball. Mednick’s season outlook? “Goal: Sea View League title. Hope: the playoffs. Dream: the Southern Section finals,” he said.
