1993 PREP PREVIEW: BOYS’ VOLLEYBALL : TEAMS TO WATCH : Huntington Beach

Coach: Rocky Ciarelli (ninth year)
1992: 20-3, 12-0 in Sunset League; reached Southern Section 4-A finals, losing to Santa Barbara; won three league titles in last four years.
Key returners: Brian Atkinson, Sr., 5-10, setter; Chris Jones, Sr., 6-2, setter; Steve Tsoneff, Sr., 6-3, outside hitter; Tom Walden, Sr., 6-1, outside hitter; Shadd Walker, Sr., 6-3, outside hitter; Jon Wimbish, Sr., 6-1, outside hitter.
Key newcomers: Mike Graves, Jr., 6-3, outside hitter; Chris Swann, Sr., 6-3, middle blocker; Nick Ziegler, Jr., 6-4, middle blocker.
Outlook: The Oilers lost two all-county players to graduation--middle blockers Claude Doumerc and Jeff VanderWal--but return one of the county’s top setters in Jones and outside hitters in Walker. Jones and Walden play basketball and likely won’t be available until at least mid-March. Atkinson, a part-time starter last season, will fill in nicely for Jones. Graves, a transfer, was Arcadia High’s top player as a sophomore last season. Ziegler and Swann should ease the losses of Doumerc and VanderWal.
