Houston Firm Leases Japanese Supercomputer: Fujitsu America Inc. of San Jose announced that it had filled an order by a Houston-based oil field services firm for one of its VPX series supercomputers. Fujitsu America is the U.S.-based subsidiary of Tokyo-based Fujitsu Ltd., one of the world’s largest computer companies. It said it had leased its VPX220 model supercomputer for a deal worth $6 million over five years. Analysts said it is the first time in nearly seven years that a Japanese supercomputer maker had sold or leased a supercomputer in the United States. Geco-Prakla of Houston, part of the Schlumberger oil field services group, is leasing the unit.
