Mexico City on Alert as Smog Chokes Area

MEXICO CITY — Authorities kept an emergency alert in place in greater Mexico City Saturday as choking smog continued to blanket the capital region.
Ozone levels hit a high of 235 points on the contamination scale in the southwestern part of the city Saturday afternoon, or 2.35 times what is considered safe.
Under the alert, the city’s environmental control commission ordered the city’s 230 worst industrial polluters to cut output by 30% to 40%.
The commission also ordered that the use of government vehicles be cut in half, paving operations halted and school children be kept indoors.
