Summer Basketball Tournament Features Local Power Simi Valley

The College of the Canyons/Saugus High summer basketball tournament, featuring area-power Simi Valley High, will begin today at Canyons and Saugus.
The 16-team tournament runs through Sunday at Canyons, culminating with a championship game at 5:40 p.m. at Canyons.
Southern Section Division I-AA runner-up Simi Valley will play Crespi at Saugus at 10:15 a.m. in its opening-round game. The Pioneers finished 24-7 last season.
Pioneer Coach Dean Bradshaw--The Times’ 1993 coach of the year--is searching for a point guard to replace graduated standout Ryan Briggs, the school’s all-time assists leader. Vernon Simmons, a talented 6-foot-6 forward-center, averaged 8.0 points and a team-leading 7.0 rebounds as a junior.
Cleveland, Canyon, Royal and San Fernando are among the local entries.
