A birthday party came to a violent end Saturday night when one man was shot to death and five others were wounded at a Silver Lake home, police said Sunday.
Maurice Loria of Pasadena was killed after being denied entrance to a party in the 2200 block of West Branden Street near Glendale Boulevard late Saturday, said Officer Raymond Garcia.
An argument began when Loria, 19, and 14 others tried to enter the party but were stopped by Charles Payton, the party’s bouncer, Garcia said. Loria did not want to pay the $5 entrance fee.
“The argument escalated, Payton pulled a concealed weapon and shot (Loria) and five others,” Garcia said. Payton said he had thought Loria was going to pull a gun, Garcia said.
Payton, 24, was arrested and booked on a murder charge.
The five who were wounded were taken to Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center and the Queen of Angels-Hollywood Presbyterian Medical Center.
