MOSCOW : Communist Vigil

Russian Communists plan an all-night candlelight vigil Friday to protest what they call “the destruction and robbery of the nation” two years ago when democratic forces thwarted a coup attempt by hard-liners in the Kremlin and forced the collapse of the Soviet Union.

The planned protest, to be capped by a march Saturday to the old KGB headquarters, is a sign of the former Communist Party’s revival and of simmering dissatisfaction with Russian President Boris N. Yeltsin, who led resistance to the coup.

Yeltsin, plagued by a struggling economy and still trying to rid Russia of its reactionary Communist-led Parliament, has announced no plans to commemorate the anniversary.
