OUTLOOK The Vanguards were co-champions last season, but not much remains from that team, including their coach. Howard replaces Bill Backstrom, who resigned after last year. Howard inherits a team that has a lot of question marks. Mitchell, who returns at quarterback, threw for 1,167 yards and 12 touchdowns during the regular season in 1992. However, he will be working behind a new offensive line. The defense returns its line, but no one else. It looks like a rebuilding year.
