Letters : Memories of S. Africa

I was delighted to see your overdue article on South Africa (“Is Now the Time?” Oct. 17). I and my husband, along with a friend, went there in 1990 and found the country very friendly, safe and beautiful. We saw all the places Scott Kraft writes about and we also drove through Soweto without any problem.
The blacks we spoke to--we made a point of talking to blacks and whites--wanted the sanctions lifted but spoke proudly of how well they had done in spite of them. It is a wonderful place to visit and we would recommend that all go with an open mind.
