County Hikes Funds for Health Benefits

The Ventura County Board of Supervisors on Tuesday agreed to spend an additional $331,000 this fiscal year on health benefits for about 500 county managers and clerks.
The supervisors will vote next week, after a public hearing, on whether to spend an additional $1.6 million on insurance for about 4,500 employees.
County officials said the increase is necessary to offset a sharp jump in the cost of health insurance.
Originally, the county had expected premiums to increase by $780 per employee under a plan with Metropolitan Life Insurance Co. But county administrators and union members agreed last month to switch to a less expensive plan with Foundation Health Corp.
The compromise move increases the county’s health insurance premiums by about $520 per employee, to a total of $4,316 annually per employee.
