An Alhambra immigration consultant has been convicted in Los Angeles Municipal Court of defrauding more than a dozen Asian immigrants of tens of thousands of dollars, promising them residency documents in return.
Lo-Li V. Gregor, 46, placed advertisements in Chinese-language newspapers promising “equivalent status for U.S. citizenship” and “green card guarantee certificates” for immigrants, saying she would acquire them through her “connections with the White House,” according to Deputy City Atty. P. Greg Parham.
Some of the victims never received any documents and others received phony certificates that Gregor made herself, prosecutors said. Gregor, who was arrested in June, operated the Hsin-Mei Investment & Immigration Co. out of offices on Wilshire Boulevard and her home in Alhambra.
She was convicted Monday on 14 counts of grand theft and 29 other counts involving violations of the business and professions code and the Immigration Consultant Act, Parham said.
Gregor will be barred from participating in the immigration business “in any fashion,” and will be required to pay an estimated $45,000 in restitution to her victims, Parham said. She is scheduled to be sentenced on Jan. 6.
