A Christmas tree fire started by a boy playing with a lighter swept through a Mid-City apartment Monday, injuring three adults and five children, authorities said.
The fire was reported at 8:11 a.m. and was extinguished by residents and neighbors before firefighters arrived, city Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said.
Andre Dixon, 29, and a 4-month-old girl were listed in stable condition at California Medical Center, where they were being treated for burns and smoke inhalation, hospital spokeswoman Catherine Montagna said.
The others--including children ages 1, 2, 5 and 8--were treated at hospitals for smoke inhalation and minor burns, then released.
