Top-seeded Pete Sampras, the defending champion, rallied from a mid-match slump to defeat Jason Stoltenberg of Australia, 6-1, 4-6, 7-5, and move into the quarterfinals of the New South Wales Open at Sydney, Australia.
Aaron Krickstein upset seventh-seeded Marc Rosset of Switzerland, 6-3, 7-5, in a second-round match and was one of five Americans to reach the quarterfinals. Also advancing were sixth-seeded Todd Martin and unseeded Ivan Lendl and Richey Reneberg.

Franz Heinzer of Switzerland, the downhill World Cup champion, crashed in practice at Kitzbuhel, Austria, and suffered a concussion and bruises, injuries that might keep him out of Saturday’s World Cup race.
