OXNARD : 4 Honored by State for Volunteer Work

Four Oxnard residents, including the city attorney, were honored by the local district of the California Parks and Recreation Society for their volunteer services during the society’s annual awards dinner.
Gary Gillig, Richard Arias, and Peter and Irene Morales were honored during the dinner, held Friday at the Goebel Senior Center in Thousand Oaks.
Gillig, 48, Oxnard’s city attorney since 1988, was chosen for his efforts in raising more than $10,000 to renovate the Colonia Park swimming pool, which had been closed since 1991 because of budget cutbacks.
Arias, 43, who does vocational training for the state and volunteers as a referee for Oxnard’s Recreation and Community Services Department, was selected for his work with the youth basketball program at Durley Park. Arias has also organized basketball tournaments to benefit youth athletic activities.
The Moraleses, both retired, were chosen for their work with Oxnard senior softball teams. Peter Morales, 73, worked 450 hours last year coaching the league, and Irene Morales, 69, helped to raise more than $4,000 to support the league.
Peter Morales also spent more than 400 hours as a driver for the city’s Senior Minibus program, which provides transportation for senior citizens.
