ONE MAN’S OWL by Bernd Heinrich, abridged and revised by Alice Calaprice (Princeton Paperbacks: $12.95; 186 pp., illustrated). Heinrich didn’t realize what he was getting himself into when he adopted an owlet orphaned by a winter storm. The endearing little ball of fluff grew into a majestic bird, and Heinrich found himself caught between his efforts to raise a self-sufficient wild creature and his desire to preserve the affectionate responses of a pet. His warm memoir offers pleasant reading, as well as information about the anatomy and behavior of the Great Horned Owl.
