GIRLS’ BASKETBALL ROUNDUP : Mater Dei Recovers to Beat San Clemente in Overtime

After squandering a 12-point lead in the fourth quarter, Mater Dei came back to beat San Clemente, 76-67, in overtime in a South Coast League girls’ basketball game Tuesday at San Clemente.
San Clemente outscored Mater Dei, 27-15, in the fourth quarter but was outscored, 11-2, in overtime.
Tina Afan scored 19 points and Melody Peterson had 17--including 13 after halftime--for Mater Dei (15-4, 6-0 in league), the fourth-ranked team in Orange County.
San Clemente’s Jenny Geminert had a rebound basket as time expired in regulation to force overtime. Michelle Macintyre scored 31 points for the ninth-ranked Tritons (14-5, 4-2).
In other South Coast League games:
Capistrano Valley 58, Mission Viejo 34--Susan Scott, a senior forward, scored 14 of her game-high 21 in the second half for host Capistrano Valley. She made seven of 11 free throws. Holly Lowe added 12 points and 10 rebounds for Capistrano Valley (11-8, 3-3).
Dana Hills 52, El Toro 30--Karun Grossman had 36 points and 12 rebounds for Dana Hills (14-5, 4-2).
In the Academy League:
Liberty Christian 50, Southeast Lutheran 14--Lynlee Vaccaro had 20 points, 10 rebounds and seven steals to lead Liberty Christian.
In the Express League:
Heritage Christian 54, Bethel Baptist 28--Sheri Larson and Alisia Kean each scored 16 points and Cherie Bozarth had 10 points and 10 rebounds for visiting Heritage Christian (10-6, 7-2).
In the Olympic League:
Orange Lutheran 64, Capistrano Valley Christian 54--Lori Wright scored 23 points and Kristin Weddick scored 17 for host Orange Lutheran (9-9, 3-4), which overcame a 34-25 halftime deficit. Andie Shaffner scored 18 points for Capistrano Valley Christian (10-8, 3-4).
Whittier Christian 78, Brethren Christian 45--Becky Duffey and Alana Kempton each scored 17 points for visiting Whittier Christian (10-7, 5-3). Leslie Parque had 12 points for Brethren Christian (3-14, 0-7).
In the Orange League:
Brea-Olinda 90, Magnolia 20--Colleen Hudson scored a team-high 17 points for Brea-Olinda (20-0, 6-0), which won its 41st consecutive game. The victory ties the Ladycats with Cerritos Gahr for the third-longest streak in Southern Section history. Brea already holds the county record with 55 consecutive from 1989-91. Riverside Poly holds the section record with 84 consecutive from 1978-82.
Valencia 45, Savanna 27--LaQuinta Alexander scored 18 points and Cindi Judd added 10 to lead Valencia (10-7, 4-2).
In Sea View League:
Woodbridge 77, Santa Margarita 27--Erin Stovall had 23 points for second-ranked Woodbridge (19-0, 8-0). Angela Burgess added 15 points and 11 rebounds for the visiting Warriors.
