The priest who tolled church bells to announce Romania’s anti-communist revolution has moved on to sports. He now prays for a World Cup victory.
Valeria Iordanescu, wife of Romanian Coach Anghel Iordanescu, made a cash donation to the church of Father Sandi Mehedintu to pray for 40 days.
“God will be on Romania’s side like in so many crucial moments in its history,” she was quoted as saying in the daily Evenimentul Zilei in Bucharest.
Mehedintu will be on duty when Romania plays Sweden on Sunday in the quarterfinals.
