World IN BRIEF : ALGERIA : 7 Foreigners Die in Terrorist Attacks
- Share via
Gunmen killed seven foreigners, including two dining in a restaurant near the capital, embassy and official sources said. Four Russians and a Romanian were killed on their way to work when men disguised as police stopped their state-owned bus, separated them from their Algerian colleagues and “machine-gunned” them, an embassy spokesman said. Later in the day, four Algerians, including the head of the state veterinary school and a senior ministry official, were also shot to death. The day’s toll raised to at least 49 the number of foreigners slain in recent months in a dramatic escalation of a campaign by Muslim fundamentalists against the government.
