TB Increase Found in Immigrants

Immigrants accounted for 60% of the recent rise in U.S. cases of tuberculosis, a federal study found.
People infected with the AIDS virus were the next largest contributors to the TB increase, with an unknown overlap between the groups, said Dr. Michael F. Cantwell, who led the study for the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
Active TB cases in the United States rose 20% from 1985 through 1992 after dropping steadily during the previous three decades. In 1993, the total number of cases was 25,313, down 5% compared to the year before.
The study, published in today’s Journal of the American Medical Assn., dealt with 1985 through 1992.
