World IN BRIEF : ANGOLA : Guerrilla Will Sign Pact if Siege Ends

Guerrilla leader Jonas Savimbi said he will sign a U.N.-brokered peace deal if the government ends a siege of his battered headquarters. A statement from Savimbi’s office in Huambo said the rebel chief was ready to sign the accord ending 19 years of civil war in the African nation. The treaty is expected to lead to a power-sharing deal between the government and UNITA, the armed opposition led by Savimbi. Government forces, mistrustful of the rebels, have continued to bombard Huambo, about 330 miles southeast of Luanda.
