Recycling Industry Study Shows Big California Growth: Businesses that collect and recycle everything from newspapers to old wine barrels have grown from just a handful seven years ago, to 1,787 companies currently, with more than 3,000 facilities throughout the state, according to a survey by Californians Against Waste, a Sacramento-based environmental foundation. Recycling revenue in Los Angeles County alone topped $600 million in 1993, with estimated revenue of $1.5 billion to $2 billion statewide last year. “Remarkably, even at the height of California’s recession, new companies were started up or existing facilities were expanded and out-of-state manufacturers were attracted to the state,” said Lance M. King, community outreach director for the group.
