SIMI VALLEY : Light at Intersection OKd After 2 Mishaps

Responding to concerns over accidents at a Simi Valley crosswalk, the City Council has agreed to install a flashing light at the intersection.
The council asked for a study on accidents at the intersection of Royal Avenue and El Monte Drive after two accidents occurred on successive days in late September.
The T-shaped intersection has a painted yellow crosswalk, and traffic coming from El Monte Drive is controlled by a stop sign.
On Sept. 26, a motorist hit a student in the crosswalk, and on Sept. 27 a teen-ager on in-line skates careened into a passing car.
A report compiled by Bill Golubics, assistant public works director, showed that despite the accidents, the intersection is as safe as others in the city.
Nevertheless, the council agreed to install a temporary flashing yellow light at the corner to warn motorists of crossing students.
The council disregarded suggestions that a crossing guard be stationed at the intersection.
“You’re talking about junior high school students,” Mayor Greg Stratton said.
“They don’t want to cross with a crossing guard. They’re a real pain.”
