HARDY? HAR-HAR

Regarding Robert Hilburn’s article about PJ Harvey (“Far From the Moshing Crowd,” May 7):
Obviously neither Hilburn nor your headline writer has ever read Thomas Hardy: “PJ Harvey sprang from the gentle English countryside of Thomas Hardy. So where did all those songs of obsession and despair come from?”
Hardy is filled with such happy things as illegitimacy, seduction and abandonment, unrequited love, accidental death and even necrophilia. In Hardy, nobody has a nice day. Therefore, someone who sprang from the same area and swims in Angst would be like Hardy, not contradictory to him and his milieu.
