REDWOOD CITY, Calif. — A man who drove around for an hour with his girlfriend clinging to the top of his van was behind bars Sunday on a variety of charges, police said.
“We believe she was up there for about an hour,” said Redwood City police Sgt. Steve Switzer.
The woman, whose name was withheld, received numerous abrasions and bruises but was not seriously injured.
Police say Frank Bamba, 23, argued with his girlfriend Saturday and got into his van to drive away. She jumped on the bumper to stop him, but Bamba kept driving.
The woman climbed atop the van as Bamba drove down busy U.S. 101.
Witnesses called 911 to report the situation, and a California Highway Patrol trooper finally pulled the car over about half an hour later.
Bamba was taken into custody on charges of kidnaping, assault with a deadly weapon, domestic violence, death threats and a state parole hold. He was taken to the San Mateo County Jail.
