VENTURA — Five members will be added to the Ventura County Sports Hall of Fame at an induction ceremony and banquet tonight at 6 at the Doubletree Hotel in Ventura.
This year’s inductees are Philip Mathews, Ventura College men’s basketball coach and athletic director; Bob Ferguson, Royal High boys’ and girls’ volleyball coach; Joe Magdaleno, Santa Paula High boys’ soccer coach; Jacque Cunningham, boat drag racing champion, and Jack Davis, former Oxnard High football coach.
Mathews, who has never had a losing season, guided the Pirates last season to the second state title in his 10 seasons at Ventura. Only six other coaches have won two or more state championships.
Ferguson coached the Royal boys’ team to four Southern Section championships. His 1989 girls’ team won the Southern Section 4-A championship.
Magdaleno has won two Southern Section and seven Frontier League titles. He was the state coach of the year in 1993.
Cunningham has won more than 20 jet boat drag racing titles in her 11-year career. She is the only woman competing in the hydroplane professional class.
Davis, an offensive guard with the Denver Broncos in the 1960s, coached five seasons at Hueneme High and 14 seasons at Oxnard. His Oxnard teams won Channel League titles in 1982 and 1986.
Besides the five honorees, the top boys’ and girls’ athletes from each county high school will be recognized at the ceremonies.
