Earthquake monitoring would be threatened under a proposed congressional budget cut, according to Caltech officials in Pasadena.
A House Appropriations subcommittee has recommended an $8.6-million cut in the U.S. Geological Survey’s $14-million budget for earthquake research. The recommendation will go to the House floor in mid-July, said officials at Caltech, which collaborates with the U.S. Geological Survey on earthquake research.
The cut would affect routine reporting of earthquake activity in Southern California, identification of hidden faults using regional earthquake data, evaluation of earthquake danger on different faults and analysis of data from the 1994 Northridge earthquake.
