HANOI — A California man was sentenced to 20 years in prison for smuggling almost two tons of hashish into Vietnam.
John Joseph Daniels, 51, of Long Beach was also fined $200,000 after a two-day trial in southern Minh Hai province. An officer of the U.S. Liaison Office in Hanoi was present during the trial.
Police arrested Daniels and two Thais 14 months ago on board a ship carrying 3,530 pounds of hashish from Thailand. The same court found the two Thais guilty of transporting narcotics. They received sentences of eight and 12 years.
