Bank On It: Principals in the attempted takeover of Los Angeles’ sole remaining mega-bank, First Interstate Bancorp, will report their fourth-quarter and full-year earnings Tuesday: First Interstate itself and its unwanted suitor, Wells Fargo & Co. of San Francisco. The Wells report will be especially closely scrutinized by the investment community. All aspects of the company are under the microscope as it pushes ahead with its hostile takeover attempt, while First Interstate attempts to carry out its agreement to be acquired by Minneapolis-based First Bank System Inc. Meanwhile, BankAmerica Corp. of San Francisco, the state’s biggest bank and the country’s second-largest, will report its earnings Wednesday. And Great Western Financial Corp. in Chatsworth, parent of Great Western Bank, California’s second-largest savings and loan, will report its earnings Thursday.
