Orange, Junior
Soccer/Sweeper
When Orange’s regular sweeper, Danny Califf, was ejected from the Panthers’ Division II semifinal game against Oxnard Rio Mesa, Gonzalez, a midfielder who already had scored to give Orange a 2-0 lead, took Califf’s place on defense. Rio Mesa later scored on a penalty kick, but with Gonzalez directing the defense, couldn’t manage more and Orange won, 3-1. Gonzalez remained at sweeper for most of the title game, helping goalkeeper Aldo Zuniga get his 14th shutout of the season, 1-0 over Compton Dominguez.
