AIRPORT WORK: Sleep-deprived residents living near Santa Monica Airport got some good news this week when city officials promised to reschedule noisy repaving work that has kept them awake.
Airport officials said they have spent the week hammering out a new construction schedule after dozens of angry calls from residents unable to sleep because of a noisy asphalt-scraping machine working last Wednesday night on the west end of the runway.
Under the new construction schedule, expected to be in place next week, work will stop by 8 p.m., officials said.
“We are trying to balance concern for the neighbors with the cost effectiveness of finishing the project in time,” said Jeffrey Mathieu, airport director.
The nighttime repaving of the taxiway had been scheduled to avoid disrupting air traffic at the busy airport. The repairs are part of a $1.7-million project to replace failed asphalt surfaces.
