Foster Youths to Get Lesson in Life Skills

When teenagers who live in foster homes turn 18, it’s usually time to move out and start new lives--on their own. But how many 18-year-olds have the skills to get jobs, set up bank accounts and lease apartments?
About 80 foster teenagers will learn how to do just that at Mission College’s third annual “Independent City USA.”
On Saturday, a “mock community” complete with police officers, a post office, bank, apartments, utility companies and health services will be set up at the school, said Miriam Baran, project director for the foster-care education and independent-living program at Mission.
Mission instructors will team up with volunteers from the real-life community to perform functions in the make-believe city.
